Meet the HR Team – Dan Hartung

Daniel J. Hartung, SPHR: Sr. HR Consultant

Dan Hartung, a Senior HR Consultant at Hubric Resources holds an impressive 45 years of human
resources management experience, and two and a half years of those encompass consulting experience
with particular strengths in policy development, recruiting, talent management, employee relations,
compensation and process management.

Says Hartung of his work for Hubric’s clients, “consulting work exists because clients need help. You
always feel like you are contributing to the client organization in a way that is going to be helpful to
them.” It’s the broad range of responsibilities his position covers that he loves most. Says Dan, “There is
always something interesting on the plate.”

One might say the Iowa State and University of New Haven grad came into his career in an
unconventional way. He explains, “I started my education aimed at Aerospace Engineering. Midway
through my sophomore year I discovered that differential equations and I were NOT going to have a
comfortable relationship. So, I looked around at other majors based on classes I had enjoyed and done
well in. Because the Industrial Relations major included Business Administration, Psychology, Economics
and Sociology classes, I decided to give that a try.” It was in a Personnel Administration class that Dan
knew he found his niche. He recalls, “we were doing a case study on a union arbitration case regarding
termination. We were asked, after being permitted to ask questions about the case, to offer a
disposition of Grievance Denied or Grievance Upheld and with what remedy. There were 23 people in
the class. Eleven found for the claimant and would have reinstated him with full back pay and time lost;
11 found for the company and upheld the discharge. I was the odd one out. I upheld the grievance and
reinstated the employee, but without back pay. My choice is how the actual arbitrator resolved the
case.”

Clearly, Dan is both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the field. He’s most proud of his efforts that
have helped employees out of unhealthy environments, those that facilitated career growth, and being
able to save significant sums of money through careful policy and practice administration for others.
Something other than work that’s near and dear to Dan’s heart is being a contributor to the Four
Diamonds Fund as his youngest son, Tim, is a leukemia survivor. Rounding out the family are his wife,
Barbara, daughter Kristie, and his oldest son, Dan. He also has four grandchildren.

In his free time, you might find Dan on an elliptical or in a pool at the gym, or at home taking on a
project, playing a tune on his harmonica, or enjoying a book by one of his favorite authors: John
Grisham, Stephen King, James Patterson, Michael Connelly or David McCullough.
